Dr Joseph Kimani Wanjeri

Dr Wanjeri is a Plastic & Reconstructive surgeon and a lecturer in the Department of Surgery of the University of Nairobi (UoN). He was head of the Plastic Surgery Unit of Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) the teaching hospital of UoN from January 2015 to November 2017. He has served Operation Smile as a volunteer surgeon for several years and is a Smile Train partner and founder of the Metropolitan Hospital Smile Train project. He was also a Director/Board member of Metropolitan Hospital, a 100 bed private private hospital in the Eastlands of Nairobi upto December, 2017.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Have taught undergraduate and postgraduate students at the Department of Surgery of
University of Nairobi since July 2000 when was employed on permanent and pensionable
terms

To be a lecturer known for facilitating high quality training, innovative research and policy
development for the production of world-class surgeons and surgical health care providers.
MISSION
To train high caliber surgical professionals, carry out creative, innovative and inventive
research in current and emerging challenges, set and apply international standards in evidence
and science based surgical healthcare provision, and be at the forefront of surgical policy
formulation.

The mandate is to play a key role in providing transformational leadership in KNH Plastic
Surgery Unit in line with the decentralized structure of the hospital to ensure that the
hospital’s vision and mission are realized.
Specific duties are;
1. Plan, organize, control and co-ordinate all services in the unit
2. Provide technical and professional guidance to team members and management as
required
3. Formulate procedures for the unit in line with the hospital performance contract and
strategic plan
4. Ensure high healthcare standards in the unit in line with the prevailing statutory
requirements
5. Ensure proper and safe collection, storage, disposal and management of solid and
liquid waste in the hospital
6. Promote research initiatives for service delivery and performance improvement
7. Prepare expenditure estimates for the unit and ensure efficient utilization of allocated
funds
8. Promote customer relations
9. Proper training and development of staff and students
10. Co-ordinate performance management activities
11. Co-ordinate quality assurance and occupational health and safety activities
12. Prepare reports on the operations of the unit as required
13. Spearhead culture exchange and re-alignment with the decentralized structure
