Dr. Necmettin Kutlu’s Journey From Hardships To Success 

Born in 1955 in Sancak, Dr. Necmettin Kutlu was the youngest child in his family. His family moved to Istanbul in 1957, leaving all their wealth behind. Dr. Kutlu was raised in adverse conditions. To make ends meet, his father started to work in a plastic factory in Topkapi. Soon, the period of political violence that convulsed Istanbul began. His father turned ill and eventually passed away when Dr. Katlu was only seven years old. 

Dr. Kutlu’s sister and younger brother started working and could not complete their studies because of the strained financial condition. Only Dr. Kutlu got the opportunity to study. It was then that he entered Darussafaka, the first private school in Istanbul. Dr. Kutlu was an intelligent child whose talent soon became evident. He also firmly believed in himself and successfully passed all the exams. He found many role models for himself at Darussafaka who molded his behavior and body language. 

Dr. Kutlu was most impressed by his biology teacher and the founder of the Turkish Nephrology Association, Dr. Kemal Onen. Dr. Onen influenced his decision to become a doctor immensely. He soon acquired a deep interest in biology and chemistry. His biology teacher was an Englishman, due to whom Dr. Kutlu spent his weekends at the Capa Medical Faculty during the second year of his graduation. During this time, he became in charge of research on the amount of protein Turkish children consumed or could not consume and the way it impacted their development. This fueled his interest in research, and soon after, he was admitted into the Capa Medical Faculty. At this time, Dr. Kutlu started working at the Grand Bazaar and became fluent in German and French, apart from Bosnian and English.

Darussafaka provided Dr. Kutlu with two scholarships. In his last year of specialization, Dr. Kutlu got the opportunity to study in Sweden. Here, he conducted in-depth research on wound healing and microcirculation. He specialized in it and then returned to the Ankara Medical Faculty to complete his military service.
